Home Instructions After Oral SurgeryBleeding

Bleeding

Some bleeding or redness in the saliva is normal for 24 hours. If bleeding becomes excessive, bite on a gauze pad placed on the wound for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, contact us for further instructions.

Swelling

Swelling is common after surgery. Apply an ice pack or a towel filled with ice to the cheek near the surgery area for the first 24 hours to minimize swelling.

Pain:

Start taking pain medication as directed once you leave the office after surgery. Ensure you have eaten something soft before taking pain medication.

Antibiotics:

Take prescribed antibiotics as directed to prevent infection.

Oral Hygiene:

Maintain good oral hygiene by using Peridex twice daily and rinsing with warm salt water 4-5 times a day. Be gentle while brushing near the surgical areas.

Activity:

Limit physical activities immediately after surgery to avoid throbbing or bleeding. If you experience these symptoms while exercising, stop exercising and rest.

Discoloration:

Discoloration of the skin may occur due to swelling, usually 2-3 days after surgery. Applying moist heat to the area may help reduce discoloration.

Nausea and Vomiting:

If you experience nausea or vomiting, wait an hour before consuming anything, including medication. Sip flat ginger ale slowly or let pieces of a cracker dissolve on your tongue.

Other Complications:

Numbness, slight fever, lightheadedness, hard projections in the mouth, dry lips, sore throat, and jaw stiffness are common post-operative experiences. These symptoms should subside in time, but contact us if you have concerns.

Finally:

Sutures may be placed to aid healing and can dissolve on their own within one to two weeks. If you experience worsening pain or swelling or have any questions, please contact us.

Ensure the surgical area is kept clean, especially after meals, using salt water rinses or a toothbrush.
